Fallbrook Technologies Inc. Announces Industry-best Six-Year Warranty On NuVinciŽ Transmission At Interbike 2008

– Over 20 bike models now available with breakthrough drivetrain; representative samples on display and demo-ready at Las Vegas show –

(Las Vegas, Nev., September 22, 2008) – Fallbrook Technologies Inc. (Fallbrook), a pioneering technology company dedicated to improving the performance and flexibility of transmissions for bicycles, light electric vehicles (LEVs) and other devices, announced today that it will increase the warranty on its innovative NuVinci continuously variable planetary (CVP) transmission from two years to six years, making it the bicycle industry’s best drivetrain warranty.

The announcement was made at the Interbike 2008 show in Las Vegas, Nev. The NuVinci booth is #4575 in the Sands Expo Center.

The warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship, and applies to NuVinci bicycle drivetrains sold worldwide beginning with consumer purchases made after September 1, 2008. The six-year warranty period begins on the date the consumer purchases the bike. Complete warranty information is available at www.fallbrooktech.com/warranty.pdf.

The NuVinci CVP has proven itself to be exceptionally durable on thousands of bikes in the U.S. and Europe. The hub requires no maintenance, and is fully sealed against the elements.

“The NuVinci hub not only gives riders a smoother, more enjoyable experience, it’s also tough enough to provide years and years of trouble-free performance,” said William Klehm III, president and CEO of Fallbrook. “Our six-year warranty makes a statement to manufacturers and riders alike – this technology is here for the long haul.”

A sampling of the 40+ bike models now featuring the revolutionary NuVinci CVP drivetrain will be on display in the NuVinci booth. In addition, bikes will be available for test rides at Interbike’s Demo Days in Bootleg Canyon, Nev. September 22 and 23.

Also on display in the booth will be a prototype of a Spot Brand bike, featuring a belt-drive system from Gates Corporation, a worldwide leader in vehicle power transmission. A new vertical dropout kit with chain tensioner – designed specifically for the NuVinci drivetrain – will be featured as well.

The NuVinci CVP and CruiseController™ won an iF Design EUROBIKE Gold Award for component design at the EUROBIKE show in Friedrichshafen, Germany on September 4, 2008 – the fifth major award the technology has won since its debut in 2007. EUROBIKE is one of the largest international trade shows for the bike industry.

“This [award] is very good news for us, because we feature the NuVinci drivetrain in our Leonardo model,” said Katrin Pfeuffer, marketing manager at Hercules Bikes. “As a result, we’re looking for increased sales in the coming months.”

The NuVinci drivetrain is now featured on more than 40 bike models manufactured by over 20 of the world’s leading brands. Brands featured in the NuVinci booth include a selection from Avenue (Denmark), Batavus (The Netherlands), Cadillac (US), Ellsworth (US), Hercules (Germany), Raleigh (Germany) and Simpel (Switzerland).

“These manufacturers – and our latest award – are a testament to the rapid acceptance of NuVinci technology as a genuine alternative to derailleurs and internally-geared hubs,” Klehm continued. “In its first 18 months on the market, the NuVinci drivetrain is already changing the way bikes around the world are designed and built.”

In 2007, the NuVinci CVP won a prestigious R&D 100 Award as one of the year’s most technologically significant products and also won the Netherlands’ FietsVak Technology of the Year Award.  The first NuVinci-equipped bicycles also won the Popular Science Best of What’s New (Grand Award, Recreation) and FietsVak Bike of the Year award.

The NuVinci CVP uses a set of rotating and tilting balls positioned between the input and output components of a transmission that tilt to vary the speed of the transmission.  Tilting the balls changes their contact diameters and varies the speed ratio.  NuVinci technology is the most practical, economical and universally adaptable continuously variable transmission (CVT) for human-powered and motor-powered vehicles and machines.  Other commercial implementations are in various stages of development.
